Catalog Description
3 hours; 3 creditsA historical overview of the field of translation studies; translation theory; an examination of intersecting theories of "transculturation" and "translation" and “contact zones”; the role of linguistic difference in mediating relations of power; translation and its relation to border and migration studies and postcolonial theory; the uses of translation and transcultural studies for theorizing culture in contexts of sexual, racial, class difference; translation and the legacies of diaspora, coloniality, and empire. Starting Fall 2020 qualifies as an Inter-Cultural Competency (ICC) course for Pathways College Option purposes. Prerequisites: Students should have completed the Brooklyn College language requirement before taking this class.
